Communications and Media Studies major by day and a fashion designer by night; Fordham freshman, Sydney Jones, is not your ordinary student. She puts her fashion inspiration to life with her amazing designs. From prom dresses to making her own customized shoes; this girl does it all! She even made the dress she’s wearing; which makes for the perfect spring look!
Name: Sydney Jones
Role: Fashion Designer
College Fashionista: Why did you start making your own clothes?
Sydney Jones: I actually started by making clothes for my american girl dolls and using staples instead of stitching. By fifth grade I had my first sewing machine and was starting to really make clothes. Then by junior year of high school I had my first fashion show, so I guess from dolls to models it escalated pretty quickly!
CF: Where did you get your sewing skills?
SJ: I spent a summer attending the Fashion Institute of Technology summer school where I honed my sewing skills; but for the most part I taught myself on my mother’s sewing machine from the ’70s.
CF: What are some go-to pieces in your closet?
SJ: It definitely depends on the season, but in the winter my go-to pieces are my black Stuart Weitzman 5050 boots and big knitted scarves (especially if they have a built in hood). In the summer, about 90% of the time, I’m in knee-high gladiators and a white flowing dress.
CF: Who inspires you the most in the fashion industry?
SJ: Personal style wise, Olivia Palermo is my girl. Job wise, I would kill to replace Grace Coddington.
College Fashionista: Where do you want to go with your business?
SJ: At this point, I’m not completely sure where I am headed. I definitely want to continue making clothes, but I’m not sure design is the side of the fashion industry I want to be on. So for now, I’m just seeing where it takes me!
Learn More: After Sydney finishes up the year here at Fordham, she will return to her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Once home, she hopes to pick up where she left off, and continue making fabulous designs. You can follow her journey as an up-and-coming designer on her Facebook page.
