Every spring, the Fashion Design and Merchandising department of CMU puts on a fashion show called Threads. Threads is for a wonderful opportunity for aspiring designers and artists. One does not have to be a design major/minor to participate in this show. Threads is applicable to apparel design, graphic design, public relations, photography, model management and program guide development. Freshman Sydney Newsome is a freshman apparel designer featured in Threads. Sydney’s collection gives off an edgy but soft feminine feel. I adore how Sydney incorporated diverse textures and volumes in her collection.
Name: Sydney Newsome
Role: Threads Fashion Show Designer
CollegeFashionista: What have you learned with your involvement with the Threads Fashion Show?
Sydney Newsome: To plan ahead and give yourself a lot more time than you would expect.
CF: What inspired you to become a design major?
SN: I would always watch Project Runway and they made a reference to Alexander McQueen. I decided to look him up, and when I saw his work, I knew that fashion was more than just clothing. It was an art form. Since then I knew I wanted to be a designer.
CF: What are you most excited about your years to come as a design major?
SN: Creating art that has meaning. Also being able to get the ideas in my head into something that is 3D and that people can wear.
CF: As a freshman, how does it feel being involved alongside upperclassmen for Threads?
SN: It’s a little nerve-wracking, but everyone has been really supportive. Ms. Fouche (Garment Construction professor) worked with me, and made it a good experience.
