Every Reason to Welcome Athleisure Into Your Wardrobe

Many retailers around the country are adopting the off-duty looks of an active athlete and pushing them into the lives of the everyday shopper in order to elevate the street style industry. Growing up as an athlete obsessed with streetwear, you can only imagine how excited I am about the return of ’90s tracksuits and footwear in the form of athleisure.

Athleisure can be summed up in five words: comfortable, fashionable, convenient, trendy, and effortless. A victim of this generation, athleisure appeals to the masses today because it epitomizes getting everything while doing very little.

Every time I get dressed, I try to differentiate my outfit from others by making sure it’s exciting and effortless. Whether it be with color, volume, accessories, or footwear, I am anxious to express myself through my clothes at every moment possible.

In this particular look, I chose to play with color and tap into my soccer background with the brands that I chose. The first piece featured is a thrifted ’90s Umbro warm-up windbreaker. I fell in love with this jacket as soon as I saw it because of its bright neon color, its volume, and because it’s Umbro! I combined the jacket with a pair of my favorite Adidas soccer track pants to add a casual, cool vibe to the outfit. For footwear, I selected a pair of leather Vans sneakers in cherry red to highlight the red in the Umbro jacket’s collar. Rounding out the look is a red monochromatic hat to further accentuate the pops of red throughout the look.

This look checked off all the boxes in order to qualify as athleisure. If you’re looking to put together the perfect athletic, casual ensemble, think of my five simple criteria: comfortable, fashionable, convenient, trendy, and effortless. Whatever you use to make a statement, stick with that and run with it. The beauty of atheisure is that there is no wrong answer.
