So… you found the job of your dreams with the perfect location and salary. The employers have narrowed down their options and it is between you and another fashion student with similar resume qualifications. The following week the company tells you that they decided to hire the other applicant. Why would they hire the other person? Well, have you checked your social media? While social media has helped a lot of people find career opportunities, it has also become a major factor in helping possible employers chose who they think is right for the position they are offering. There are a couple of ways to grab the employer’s attention using your Instagram.
1—Be Representative. When people see your social media before they actually meet you, they automatically assume that your Instagram represents you completely, and in a way, it should. If you use incorrect grammar in your posts, employers will think that you won’t be able to communicate well and don’t pay attention to detail. A recent survey showed that more recruiters frowned upon poor grammar than drinking in posts—although, that doesn’t mean that you should post drinking pictures… nice try though.
2—Show Your Passions. Recruiters want to hire someone who is well rounded and will bring something different to their company. Post some pictures of you doing the things that you love. It helps it these passions somehow correspond with the industry that you want to enter. If you want to work in the fashion industry, post some pictures of you styling models or researching trends in magazines. Show that you are involved in your community by doing community service or shopping at local boutiques. Preferably one with aesthetically pleasing backgrounds, comfy chairs, and a chalkboard to record all of your brilliant ideas.
3—Take Initiative. Don’t wait for the perfect job to pop up. Start looking by following companies that you want to work for and maybe reach out to some employees for advice. Employers know that almost everyone that is following them is interested in working for their company. Company’s social media also give you information about what is currently happening and what is going to happen in the future. It allows you to keep up to date with the company so that you will be able to impress recruiters in an interview.
