When Streetwear Passes High-Fashion

As brands such as Louis Vuitton and Goyard rise within the world of high-fashion, so do streetwear brands such as The Hundreds and Supreme. Out of all divisions of fashion, most of today’s up-and-coming youth love streetwear. Streetwear is a street style that has mainly been orbited around Californian culture. Along the southern east coast, where I’m from, streetwear is not as common amongst youth and young adults as it is on the west coast. So you could only imagine my excitement at seeing other individuals who are also interested in the street culture.

I ran into this Fashionista on the streets and instantly lit up with excitement! Not only was she dressed well, but she was clothed in brands that I love, such as Stüssy and Vans. This Fashionista created her street-savvy look by using a Stüssy graphic tee, distressed skinny jeans, an oversized Levi’s jean jacket, and Vans checkerboard slip-ons.

If you ask me, streetwear is slowly but surely turning into the new day high-fashion.  The two are beginning to rely on each other to set the trends. While high-fashion brands are beginning to receive more creative inspiration from street style, streetwear keeps it casual. For example, earlier this year, Louis Vuitton collaborated with Supreme and showcased the collection at the mens fall runway show. Streetwear always has been and always will be my favorite division of fashion, because it is effortless and cool. The thing I love most about streetwear is that there is not a lot of outfit copying; it allows us all to express our individuality. Within this division of fashion, people tend to have more of a spirit of individuality versus a spirit of following the hottest and latest trends, and that is why it has the potential to replace high-fashion.
