Dearest Fashionistas, which of you have a denim jacket? I’m sure 99/100 of you will say yes to this, but maybe only two of you will have the same style denim jacket. In this photo, our fashionista is wearing a black denim jacket from Zara that’s printed in the back to differentiate it from the more regular oversized denim jacket.
For the past 40 years or so, denim has always been in fashion – mostly for pants, but styles change with the trends by rise, width around the ankles, and allover fit. Denim jackets are usually on trend as well, but will also change as far as fit, style, wash, and added details such as studs, embroidery, patches, etc. Right now, oversized denim jackets are the rage, and any added embroidery or patches are more than welcome. The patches or embroidery also allow you to customize your jacket, because in a city full of oversized denim, it’s still important to differentiate your personal style and apparel. Patches can add color if you live in a brighter city, but because we live in New York, NY—black is the most important color.
Trying to match your light wash denim jacket to a pair of pants can be difficult. Black denim makes it a little easier, but I still prefer a little touch of another color to bring out the print on the back. So here we went with a pair of olive green drawstring pants to keep the look casual, yet slimming.
While the jacket is obviously the star of this outfit, and a plain black T-shirt underneath would have been fine too, this lace-up ribbed top adds a different texture and detail in the front where otherwise there would be none. Long necklaces are a hard pass with lace up tops, because they can get caught and tangled in the ties, so here I opted for a thick velvet choker. With your hair pulled back, this can slim out your neck beautifully and accentuate your jaw bones for the natural contour we all crave.
This outfit would also work with a pair of sneakers for a true Brooklyn hipster look, but because I love to mix up styles and make even the edgiest look a little classier, I added a pair of black ankle boots.
Denim jackets are all different, and there’s a million and one different styles out there—so go get one that fits your look, and if you can’t find the perfect one, grab some patches and make it your own!
