STYLE ADVICE: Light and Dark

Color can always add magic to an outfit. Using different combinations can turn a basic outfit into an eye-catcher. The most important thing to remember is to make sure that the colors aren’t too loud, that they don’t clash, or that they aren’t too bland.

One example of a bad color combination are cool neutral colors, such as beige, gray, or white, used with pale colors. These colors can end up washing each other out if there isn’t any contrast in the outfit.

A great way to avoid this would be to try color blocking, which is when you use contrast to block colors in an outfit. Let’s say you have a baby pink top and coral jeggings, you can break it up by adding big black belt and black boots.

This Fashionista from the University of Memphis uses light and dark colors in her outfit to make it different. The burgundy beanie, plaid dress, and black sweater made her gray hair stand out against the dark colors of her outfit.

Another way to make your clothes fabulous is if you use good patterns. Like with this Fashionista, her plaid dress has the same colors as her sweater and beanie. It works because she didn’t use too many colors or any other patterns.

Dark and light colors are the perfect combination because they play off of each other. They have the ability to strengthen one or the other. This Fashionista’s dark clothes made her light hair stand out more than her dark clothes. This makes for one awesome outfit!
