While women often use layering as a style tool, most guys simply look at layers as a way to stay warm. Why should guys layer their clothes as a means of style? Well, if it gets a little toasty, it’s easy to take one item off while maintaining a cohesive and stylish look! Hello, it’s 2017 and it’s perfectly acceptable for a guy’s everyday wardrobe to exceed the generic long sleeve T-shirt and zip up hoodie look… Even in college!
If you’re on board, try using the following tips of layering clothes to your advantage. My two key tools to remember when layering up are the following:
First, outer hems must be longer than your inner hems. This is a key rule for me (unless you are fully committed to doing the opposite only as a means of achieving a specific style.) So either tuck those undershirts in or invest in longer outer wear. Otherwise the outfit may seem like it’s a bit small for your size.
Second, accessories are for guys, and they always count as layers! Now, I know scarfs and pocket squares might be a little far-fetched for our everyday college guy’s closet. However, trying a simpler accessory layer can do wonders for a look. Implementing a nice watch, belt or, textured shoe is an easy way to put the extra oomph into an everyday look.
This look embodies layering up in a relatable way. My favorite part of this Fashionisto’s ensemble is his classic long-sleeve denim shirt. I also chose to highlight his leather strap watch and brown leather belt as an example of using accessory layers. All of these pieces are simple but make the difference when completing the layering look.
Guys, it’s time to give it a try and embrace layering up!
