As I have transitioned into the college life in New York City, I’ve noticed one significant change in my sense of style: my wardrobe has quickly become about 85 percent black. Black is simple, chic and classic, which is why it is the perfect color to wear. Black is a staple item that every Fashionista/o should own, however, sometimes wearing all-black can be a little too plain or dreary.
A good tip to have in mind when wearing an all-black outfit it to play with textures and shades of black. This Fashionista does that oh so well! The one feature of her outfit that perfectly embodies this style tip is her coat. Her coat is a long, straight coat with faux leather sleeves and an off centered zipper. Leather sleeves are super on-trend and can instantly give you some extra style points. The coat also has subtle textured details on the pockets and a faux leather rim along the collar and seam of the coat. Although the entire piece is black, the detailing and varying textures add dimension and edginess to something that takes two seconds to throw on.
Once inside, her outfit still follows the varying textures rule. Her black and white houndstooth skirt adds some pattern and texture to the rest of her outfit while still flowing with the monochromatic vibe. Her cute booties not only add winter feelings, but they also add some texture with the wool rims and lace-up shoe strings. Although her top, leggings and boots remain all-black, each one varies slightly in its shade of black or has something subtle in the detailing that adds a bit of “oomph” to the look.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Black is an easy go-to when it comes to making decisions regarding my outfit, but when wearing an all-black outfit, I try to throw in something extra that gives my outfit dimension or something extra that makes it a bit more interesting!”
