The saying goes that history repeats itself, especially in fashion. One trend that has resurfaced from my favorite decade, the ’90s, is plaid. Be it Cher’s iconic miniskirt suit in Clueless or the four witches in The Craft, this statement pattern made quite the impact on the fashion industry at the time and remains extremely popular today as the ’90s come back around again (finally).
But what has made plaid so popular now? Versatility. There are so many different ways to wear plaid, and each one gives off a completely different vibe. There are the classic oversized flannels, pleated skirts, jackets, scarves; the list goes on. From just one fabric, you can end up with preppy styles, punk rock styles, lumberjack styles, the cult favorite Brandy Melville and even the grunge aura this Fashionista created with this ensemble.
This Fashionista took a very different spin on the classic pattern by throwing a cutoff maxi vest, if you will, overtop an otherwise all-black outfit. By keeping the rest of the outfit very monochromatic with a simple black dress and black suede boots, she was able to put all of the focus on the plaid cover-up and pastel sunglasses. So whether it’s just a flannel tied around your waist or something as bold as a schoolgirl miniskirt, next time you’re at the mall, look for your next plaid piece to add a little ’90s flare to your wardrobe.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I just always try to look my best and to have fun with what I wear. I don’t normally care if it’s weird or different than what everyone else is wearing—that’s what makes me stand out!”
