STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: April Showers

I remember looking at the dorm supplies checklist Florida State University issued to incoming freshmen. There were the conventional items like an Ethernet cable, a shower caddy and bed sheets. Thrown into the mix was an item I found strange, a raincoat. I found it odd the university insisted on students bringing a specific article of clothing. As my third year in Tallahassee comes to a close, I now know the reasoning behind this demand. Rain. Rain. Rain. Every time I check the forecast there is rain. April showers might bring May flowers, but even flowers don’t soften the blow of continuous storms. What does soften the blow? A fabulous raincoat.

In the few minutes it took me to photograph this Fashionista, she was complimented three times. That’s more than I can say for myself on a typical rainy day. Investing in chic rain gear is a major plus in Florida. This Fashionista wears an off white raincoat with a floral design. The loosely fit coat with a scalloped hemline is pretty and practical for the bipolar Florida weather. Underneath she wore a pink lace dress with a floral pattern. Each piece radiates daintiness and lightness, two common style characteristics of spring. Together they make for a beautiful (and appropriate) look.

You must always be prepared for a sudden downpour in Florida. Why not collect a raincoat that you actually want to wear? Sure, you can go for the typical solid colored coat, but what’s the fun in that? Step out of the box and opt for a raincoat with style. Patterned and bold coats add unexpected detail to a look on a gloomy day. Follow in the steps of this Fashionista and you will be wishing for rain instead of dreading it.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Don’t wear long pants on rainy days. They take forever to dry when you’re sitting in class all day!”
