STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Back Up Your Basics

These days, “basic” has taken on a negative connotation, but being basic isn’t always bad.

One thing I hear from a lot of friends and students on campus when we’re admiring an outfit that makes a statement or commenting on accessories is that they like fashion, but they think they don’t know how to be fashionable, don’t live in a fashionable area or dislike piling on all the additions. Fashion is everywhere and it comes in infinite forms.

For Fashionistas that find solitude in simplicity but don’t identify with what they consider to be minimalist, brand yourself with your basics. White T-shirts are as basic as clothing comes and that took off as not just a trend, but as a fashion staple, because of the versatility of what people chose to style them with.

This Fashionista likes to dress simply for class, and whether that’s your regular style or what you’ll have to settle for because you’re in a rush, it works! When it comes to basics, the key is to back them up with the details. Notice she cuffed her jeans, but others might try tucking in their shirt or knotting it on the side.

This Fashionista wore her go-to sneakers, and this look would work just as well with a pair of flats or it could be dressed up with some heels. The details you choose bring out your personality and while the outfit might be basic, the way you choose to present it shows you’re so much more!

For her, it was a stack of bracelets on one arm, a ring on each hand and her favorite sunnies. All of these accessories only take a second longer to slip on and mixing them up makes it that much more fun! I don’t own much jewelry, so when I wear an outfit like this, I like to throw on a hat—big and floppy for sunny days, maybe even a beanie if weather permits—or make myself stand out with a bold lip color and my favorite heeled booties. Some people are into scarves or purses or shoes. Hair and makeup always work too! If it’s a little chilly, try throwing a cool jacket over it or tying a plaid shirt around your waist. Do you, Fashionistas! The basics got your back.
