Don’t get me wrong, I love some good skinny jeans and regularly spend hours on Nordstrom’s website deciding who is most worthy of my paycheck, rag & bone or 7 For All Mankind. And although the denim trend is stronger than ever thanks to Vogue‘s amazing Snoop Dog-esque denim video that just dropped, occasionally it’s nice to take a break from the classic every-day staple and branch out a little. Fitted pants other than jeans are somewhat of unchartered territory for a lot of Fashionistas, and can be a bit daunting. The very word “trouser” is a little scary on its own, conjuring up images of unflattering pantsuits circa 1982. However, when styled the right way, the alternative to the skinny jean is trendy and unique.
This Fashionista stood out to me because of how of how edgy-cool she looked. Her look was completely doable but still seemed like it had a rightful place on the pages of Teen Vogue. Her high-waisted loose fitting pants were the clear focal point of the outfit, capitalizing of the chic sweatpants/athleisure trend that has stolen our hearts. The neutral gray color and bunched ankle popped against her high-heeled black booties, and were accented by her simple black midi top, keeping the look casual and comfortable. Her draped military style jacket adds a flattering shape to her outfit while while framing the high-waisted fit of her jogger-style pants. A neutral color palette always needs an accent of some sort, and this Fashionista chose to incorporate subtle pops of metallic through her watch and sunglasses. Overall, I’m obsessed.
Temple is filled with a lot of trendsetters. When the weather is nice, the walk to class is like watching a fashion show featuring hundreds of different designers and styles. In a sea of Fashionistas and Fashionistos, sometimes it’s hard to stand out. Choosing a piece that is less traditional, and still a representation of your own unique personal style, is a great way to confidently strut your way to Chem 1101. So next time you find yourself reaching for yet another pair of destroyed skinny jeans on the rack, try stepping of your comfort zone and picking up some dressed up joggers for your next look.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Really do your own thing; just because something isn’t trendy right now doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear it. Don’t be afraid to stand out, you never know what trend you might start.”
