Introducing the mini-mono: summer’s new take on last year’s uber-trendy, yet classic, kimono. After listening to my dad ask me about my ‘smoking jacket’ enough times I decided to coin a new term, and the mini-mono was born. Last summer trendistas and hipsters threw a tasseled kimono on over every outfit and called it good; this summer is a little different. The mini-mono is perfect for achieving that trendy look without committing to a full-length style!
It is important to think of this trend as a versatile one. Kimonos of all lengths can be worn during day or night, to casual or dressy events or even either indoors or outdoors. Because they are so lightweight and thin, they offer a perfect amount of all-over pattern or color without trapping in the summer heat. Kimonos come in all kinds of fabrics and styles, and they can be added onto any basic look to instantly pull it all together. Our Fashionista styled her go-to summer outfit with classic and casual high waisted jean shorts, a simple camisole and dangling earrings to compliment her undone up-do.
The key to styling a perfect outfit with your mini-mono is remembering to have the bottom hem hit above the hem on your shorts or skirt, otherwise it’s just a kimono. What’s great about this shorter style is that you can have just enough of your bottoms peeking out underneath it just so that everyone still knows you’re wearing pants (always important to keep in mind!). Although this mini-mono is shown over casual Levi’s, you could always opt for some ankle-cropped black skinny jeans for some added oomph on dressier days.
What’s your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Remember that styling with kimonos and mini-monos should always be kept cool and casual. Kimonos are such a naturally sexy piece that they will add that perfect dash of femininity to any casual outfit.”
