STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Bringing Color into Your Winter Wardrobe

If you’re anything like me, my go-to winter coat is black, my favorite boots are black, my gloves are black and my warmest scarf is ombré (from gray to black). On the way to class, I’m a blur of black leather and black wool. However, one of this winter season’s best trends has been colored outerwear — anything from the multi-colored, massive fur coats of Alexander McQueen, to the rich red and tan peacoats of Burberry and the colored tweed coats of Chanel. If you do not have the money to splurge on a jewel-toned peacoat or just do not want to invest in a new coat whose color makes it inflexible to pair with many outfits, you can just as easily follow the trend and bring some color into your winter wardrobe by adding bright accessories to your closet.

This Fashionisto adds pops of red to his all black ensemble with a warm, gray, red and burgundy plaid scarf. The rich, jewel-tones of his scarf are brightened by the red button-down he wears underneath his black cardigan. I love how the tails of the shirt show below his sweater — this brings the vibrant red down from his neck to his waist and creates a more harmonious, collected look.

He completes his outfit with a black winter jacket, black skinny jeans, black gloves and black patent Dr. Martens. A fashionable, all-weather boot is a must-have for New York City winters (see that salt scattered on the pavements in the background? We need strong boots!) and what better to tackle this winter than the classic, easily styled Dr. Marten boot?

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, neither was a great wardrobe. Focus on finding pieces that showcase your style and function with the other clothing in your closet. In time, you will have a wardrobe that you love with pieces that all work together.”
