I was just chatting with a fellow Style Guru about how tough it can be to get creative about winter wear as West Coast writers. Truthfully, we really do have the good fortune of always putting the same wardrobe pieces to use. Well, almost always. It seems that I spoke too soon this week, as Los Angeles has been hit with a torrential downpour—at least in our book. It certainly poured enough that cars are hydroplaning. My friends used coffee shop napkins to dry off and I write this wearing a cozy, oversized sweatshirt. So, how does one tackle this unusual California weather in a more stylish manner? This week’s Fashionista lets a classic plaid pattern and corduroy jacket do all the talking.
Burberry is famous for its immediately recognizable trenches and preppy plaid patterns. This Fashionista’s top may not actually be Burberry, but she certainly embodies their classically chilly vision and redesigns it for Californian wear. By choosing a tan plaid blouse rather than their ever-popular wool scarf, she incorporates a piece that can be layered just as much on chilly days as it can be paired with white jeans for spring. While her tan corduroy jacket has all the class and color of Burberry’s most iconic staples, its pockets and zippers make it perfect for a cool California girl. You can wear it in the rain or layer it over a romper at a picnic! It sounds like a winning outfit either way.
As two pairs of my soaked shoes attempt to recover from the rain, this Fashionista knows which style to depend on. Rain boots aren’t necessarily a commonality in the Golden State, but riding boots are! The brown strip at the top of her black boots makes them perfect for pairing with any neutrals. Best of all, by wearing dark jeans, this Fashionista eliminates the awkward splotches on lighter blue denim when in the rain!
Last but not least, I can’t go without mentioning this Fashionista’s awesome backpack. Talk about a bright spot on a cloudy day! She gets extra points for using the bag to highlight the red stripes on her plaid shirt.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I admit, I didn’t realize this was super cute, because my main goal was definitely staying warm and comfortable! That’s always my number one goal when the weather is iffy. Feel good and you’ll look better!”
