STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Dress Up To Dress Down

The school year has just started, and I know guys have started to wonder just what exactly are they going to wear to class. The summer break gave Fashionista/os the opportunity to potentially dress down during the hot months away from their peers and their public campus. And after so many weeks of keeping the styling to a relaxed minimum, students might find it hard to transition from what they’ve been used to while still wanting to look put together.

When it comes to wanting to maintain a relaxed style for class, lazy outerwear appears to be the key component. First, cotton athletic joggers became the staple item to begin the dress up and dress down look. Remember during the late ’90s when tying rubber bands to cinch the bottoms of your jeans and sweatpants was a thing? Nearly 20 years later, the jogger sweatpants came about with elastic, tapered seams to represent the earlier cinched look.

As the hot months have come upon us, sweatshorts have become a cooler approach to the relaxed and put together look. Sweatshorts begin this comfy look, but a casual T-shirt and sneakers will always complete it.

This Fashionisto has put together his relaxed look by combining a graphic T-shirt with his sweatshorts and sneakers. The paradoxical relationship between a casual T-shirt and lazy sweatshorts is being able to maintain a put together look while not looking too lazy and laid back. David Beckham even extended his line of apparel with H&M just a few months ago, branching out from his popular cotton T-shirts and boxer briefs to jogger sweatpants and their cut-offs relative.

This lazy sportswear trend has spread itself among menswear and womenswear, as the latest athletic-chic apparel to make sure that no look is classified as too dressy or too lackadaisical.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I know what it’s like to want to seem dressed up for class, but also not want to appear too lazy. That’s why sweatpants and sweatshorts are the best. Anything in your wardrobe that you can dress up and also dress down is essential.”
