Denim is a classic staple of everyone’s wardrobe, so it’s easy to get bland with the look. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t fresh ways to dress up what seems like a simple piece in your closet to something edgy. So, go grab that denim you’ve hid in your closet and get ready to dress it up.
The key to dressing up denim is all in how denim complements the other pieces of your outfit. I loved how this Fashionista decided to go denim top and bottom, without making it look like some tacky take on overalls. By choosing two different shades of denim, she was able to create a contrast for the eye, so it wasn’t one static piece of denim. The details on her denim pieces helped to bring interest to the outfit as well! Her top had pockets, buttons and a collar which offered a classier look to simple denim. Her jeans also were ripped at the knee, to break up a single stream of denim. She found balance within her denim pieces even though it covered so much of her body.
My favorite aspect of this Fashionista’s look was her coat and hat…wow. This was the first thing I noticed when I saw her outfit, actually, even before the denim. I knew she was doing something right. By matching her hat and long coat spot-on, she was able to create consistency here. By choosing soft colors in grand, bold pieces, she added onto her outfit to provide something more dressed up and representative of her risky personality. In the end, she really only has two colors on, but she understands the importance of finding balance and the little details that add to the overall look.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love wearing pieces that match my iconic style, where I always wear a hat and long coat. Don’t be afraid to choose pieces that match in color or fabric. Just pay attention to the complement pieces and you’ll be fine.”
