STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Fashion Forward Finals

As I’m writing my final CollegeFashionista article for this semester, I take comfort in the fact that this is the last deadline I have to worry about before Christmas. My exams finished a few days ago and I get to enjoy the holidays early this December. Some of us, however, are not so lucky. I am well aware that some fellow Fashionistas and Fashionistos are still slaving away at the library preparing for their finals, possibly (and uncharacteristically!) donning baggy sweats and hoodies. So to all you studious guys and gals, this one is for you!

“Dress for success,” as they say. I think this piece of career advice hold so much truth, but it’s something you can apply to college life. The way you dress has an impact on motivation, confidence and overall performance. I know it’s tempting to walk into the library in some comfy but frumpy outfit but in my opinion, taking a few extra minutes in the morning to think about what you put on really places you in the right mindset for a day of studying. It makes your brain think, “Okay, today is going to be an important and productive day.” On the other hand, wearing sweatpants, an item of clothing normally associated with lounging around watching movies and eating pizza, might have the opposite affect. Personally, when I study wearing loungewear, I don’t really feel like I have to study. The fact that I’m wearing clothes that I could also wear to bed doesn’t help either. It’s the same as people telling you that it’s bad to study in bed!

I spotted this Fashionisto on the way to campus during study week. In a sea of sweatpants and hoodies, he stood out in his striking two tone outfit and Timberland boots. This outfit is fashion forward and effortless. It’s fuss free without any accessories but still retains its cool factor. He puts his outfit together using classic pieces like a pair of true blue jeans, a cotton T-shirt and his favourite pair of boots. What caught my eye in particular was his jacket. It’s a denim jacket but in a beige color, something we don’t often see in shops. It’s similar in tone to his T-shirt. This Fashionisto told me it was actually a work jacket which he stole from his dad’s wardrobe! So maybe here’s another piece of advice: raid your parents’ wardrobes, you never know what kind of gems are hidden in there!

Nonetheless, the main thing I want you to take from this article is to keep in mind the power of clothes and how they can affect your attitude. This is especially relevant for critical times in the semester like class presentations, study week, the exams themselves. We don’t necessarily have to be the best-dressed, but dressing for success might just help bring that GPA up!
