If you’re a fashion student, there will come a time when you learn about the fashion cycle. Your professor will explain the infamous bell curve to you that includes the rise, peak, decline, etc. and you will feel like you’re in a science class (cue the anxiety attacks). However, even though the lecture itself is a snooze fest, when you see the fashion cycle happen in real life, it’s actually pretty interesting.
Take the flannel for example. Using proper terminology (my professor would be proud), the flannel peaked back in the ’90s. Since I was only four years old, I don’t recollect rocking flannels to preschool, but I secretly hope my mom put in the effort to keep baby me looking hip (though, by the looks of my embarrassing childhood photo album, it’s doubtful). In this lecture, my professor stated that fashion trends have about a 20 to 30 year turn around. She just about nailed that one on the head. Who knew that what we learn in class is actually accurately relevant?
So here we are 25 years later, bringing back the good ol’ flannels. Last year, flannels made their comeback and, like this Fashionista, I’m grateful they’re still popular. In upstate New York, the weather chooses to be cloudy and 60 degrees one week, then sunny and 85 degrees the next week. This means a flannel is a necessity in a SUNY Oneonta student’s wardrobe. Flannels are not only functional, serving as a sweater or thin jacket, but are also cozy and chic.
Check out how this Fashionista used her flannel to create a grungy, vintage vibe. First, she threw on a casual black dress, which is an obvious staple that every girl needs. Second, she paired the dress with black, strappy gladiators that scream, “badass!” Third, she layered two necklaces, stacked on some leather bracelets and grabbed her bright green backpack. Even as she’s about to run out the door to class, she remembers her flannel, which ties adds a pop of color and completes the look. Overall, the outfit is effortless. I wish getting ready every day was as easy as this Fashionista makes it look.
