STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Goodbye White Pants, Hello Fall

Did you know that in the early 1900s “summer” was bound between Memorial Day and Labor Day? People would venture to seaside for the whole summer, leaving behind their heavy “city clothes.” But when the summers ended, they would return to the city and return to their heavier clothing, which didn’t include whites. This is where the phrase, “No white after Labor Day” originated.

Although summer is my favorite season, fall is my favorite season for fashion. Since the first day of fall doesn’t officially start until September 23rd, I wanted to give you some advice on one of my favorite summer looks before we pack them up till next year (don’t fret, the Fashionista’s photos were taken the day before Labor Day). As I was walking through campus the week before Labor Day, I noticed more people wearing white than normal. I assumed it was because everyone knew the rule and was trying to get one last white outfit in before it was forbidden—or at least, I hoped.

I love wearing white in every season but I truly believe that every Fashionista should own white pants for the summer. They work with endless articles of clothing and are perfect for that cooler summer night (or if you’re just tired of wearing shorts and skirts). You can also find these almost everywhere right before summer starts. This Fashionista doubled the white in this outfit by adding a long, plain white V-neck T-shirt. But this outfit wouldn’t be as awesome as it is if it weren’t for the jean vest. It pulls the outfit together, while adding a vintage touch. It doesn’t take too much attention away from the pants. When I think of white pants, I definitely think more casual, but if you wanted to be a little dressier, brown/tan wedges are the perfect addition, just like she wore.

Accessories are always important, too. Excessive amounts of rings can look so unique. When you have a simple outfit, such as this Fashionista’s, you can deck it out buy pilling them on. This summer, layered necklaces have made a debut. The trend used to be the single, long chain, with a detailed charm at the end. Now it’s all about short and long layered chains with simple charms like gold feathers and stones. Without the necklace, she would have too much continuum between the white shirt and white pants.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Wearing white clothes can be difficult sometimes. You have to be careful of what you pair it with so you don’t overwhelm or dull down the outfit. You also have to be careful of the season your in. Keep the white shirts out for good, but say goodbye to the pants in the fall and winter; don’t worry, you’ll see them again next summer.”
