With the unpredictability of Chicago weather, Fashionistas/os on DePaul’s campus are faced with the unique challenge of dressing for freezing temperatures in the morning and boiling temperatures in the afternoon. Because of the drastic changes in weather, layers become increasingly important. It can be hard to find a sweater or jacket that is just right for spring and summer.
This is why I love kimonos—they are typically lighter than the average sweater and usually have a beautiful pattern that makes them perfect for spring and summer. They come in a variety of patterns icluding everything from floral to tribal prints, and a lot of them will have some kind of fringe embellishing the bottom. Depending on the occasion, you can rock a waist-length kimono or even a calf-length kimono.
This Fashionista knows how to work a kimono better than anyone I know! The knee-length kimono that she is wearing features a fun pattern in maroon, cream and black, giving the outfit a rustic feel. This is a great piece to throw on for cooler summer nights. She is also rocking one of my favorite staple wardrobe pieces: the bodycon black dress. Incredibly versatile, this dress can be paired with virtually any kimono for a dressier look. To round out the look, she has a fantastic pair of beige wedges, perfect for amping up the look for a night out. She also has a pair of gold earrings from Lucky Brand and a gold knot necklace to match. By incorporating simple, neutral accessories into the ensemble, this Fashionista is able to show off her kimono.
To dress down this look, this Fashionista could pair the kimono with a pair of dark-wash jeans, a simple black top and a pair of flats.
