Skateboarders don’t get enough attention in the fashion world. They are often considered grungy, but I must beg to differ. Skaters make good use of their feet, so the shoes they wear are of great importance. They are not wearing the baggy pants and bulky shoes of their ‘90s and early ’00s counterparts. Lifestyle brands like Huf have emerged to cater to the needs of this demographic, and many fashion and athletic labels are catching on. Adidas recently collaborated with the London-based skateboarding company Palace, and Derek Lam’s forthcoming line for Target will feature a skateboard. Did I mention Vogue recently published an article online titled “18 Spring Skateboard Decks to Flip For”?
This Fashionisto has the right idea. He is wearing a denim-on-denim combination, accompanied by a pair of Huf shoes, a Huf six-panel hat and a Mother skateboard. A Southern California native, he has been skateboarding since childhood. He says he is always looking for new shoes and hats that are both functional and fashionable.
For the rest of you Fashionistas and Fashionistos, you can up your street style game this summer by implementing some skate wear into your wardrobe. Ladies, pair a minimalist dress with a pair or classic Supergas or perforated leather slip-on Vans. Something with a thick sole will do the trick. Guys, try a pair of Nike SB Lunar Stefan Janoskis or the latest Palace collaboration (if you can get your hands, or shall I say feet, on them). Top it all off with five- or six- panel hat.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Keep it simple. You don’t need a lot of flashy patterns, logos or colors. You want to look good and feel good while you’re performing and expressing yourself. Skateboarding is as much of an art form as it is a sport.”
