A so-called winter in Florida presents high temperatures and warm mornings, which gives us residents little opportunity to don our favorite jackets and sweaters. Although hitting the beach beats shoveling snow any day, I still long for the opportunity to style myself in warm and toasty outerwear. Dying for an alternative that wouldn’t leave me dying in the heat, I spotted this Fashionista who gave me just the inspiration I needed. Her duster cardigan had short sleeves and a draped, airy feel.
Big-looped, chunky knits are all the rage this winter and spring, as their comfort and effortless appeal is unparalleled by traditional wool sweaters and cashmere cardigans. This stylish student tossed her knit-pick over a sheer BCBGeneration tank top adorned with lace, and loose-fitting, Anthropologie, utility jeans. The contrast of a flirty and femme top versus the structured masculinity of utility pants is balanced perfectly with her sweater, which exudes comfort. She completed the look with rustic, brushed, suede, ankle boots in an earthy, chocolate brown. Accessorizing simply, this Fashionista had a gold pendant necklace draped loosely around her neck, and green wool socks that peeked out of her boots as a whimsical addition. Revealing her style secrets, she divulged to me that she purchased both her boots and sweater at Nordstrom Rack, which is a great place to shop for a trendsetter on a budget!
Duster cardigans are extremely versatile due to their lengthy structure. They can be worn over cords, jeans or leggings for a long and lean look, or over shorts or a dress to break up the lengths and layers in an ensemble. For colder climates, a short sleeved version such as this Fashionista’s can be layered over a flannel or turtleneck. Pair with some black leather leggings or your favorite jeans and a pair of boots for a chic winter outfit. If you’re like me and are living in a state that swelters instead of snows, consider wearing a duster cardigan over a loose tank and a pair of boyfriend shorts. Pairing a duster cardigan over your favorite sundress will also amp up your style. Finish either look with a pair of gladiator sandals. Remember to bring your favorite pair of sunnies! Living in the Sunshine State, I never go anywhere without them.
Next time you’re knit-picking, consider choosing a duster cardigan. They are ultracomfortable, transformable and chic. You’ll thank me later!
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I love to be comfortable and get the most for my money, so my advice would be to invest in cool pieces that you can wear everywhere and that you also love wearing. I can wear this sweater a million different ways and it’s super soft and cozy!”
