STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Nailing the Nineties

It’s no surprise that fashion from different decades recycles itself over and over again. Trends and styles that were once old and outdated suddenly become reborn and new again. It seems as if every year a new decade resurfaces. Last year it was the ’70s and we were all wearing suede, fringe, and fun prints. Right now, however, the ’90s are on playback in so many ways!

The ’90s was a youthful time period and was all about living a relaxed and carefree lifestyle. Some of the biggest trends that came out of this era are grunge and minimalism. The ’90s look is about emulating a cool-girl vibe. Kate Moss was one of the most famous models during this time and many people looked up to her style. She gave off a “too-cool-to-care” vibe, which is exactly what ’90s fashion is all about.

After scoping out the streets, I couldn’t help but notice that everyone was recreating the ’90s in their own way. I saw everything from slip dresses and Dr. Martens, to concert tees and ripped jeans. Grunge was everywhere! Getting this look is really quite simple. Some staple grunge pieces include: concert tees, ripped jeans, flannels, crop tops, chokers and sneakers. Most of us have many of these items in our closet already, so the only thing left to do is to learn how to pair them together.

Let’s start with the color scheme. Grunge was a dark time, so you will want to focus in on dark colors like black, navy, red or brown. When choosing your pieces, think simple. As you can see in this look, the black and red flannel was paired with a plain black t-shirt. Ripped jeans were a must, as they are a grunge staple.

When it comes to accessorizing, you should also take a minimalistic approach. A fun lace choker and your favorite sneakers are all a grunge look really needs! If you’re not satisfied, try doubling up two kinds of chokers, a thin one and a thicker one for a more playful look. If you want to play around with beauty, add a dark brown lip to really give you the ultimate grunge-girl vibe.
