Baby blue, soft yellow, rose pink and off-white. Are these the colors signaling the coming of spring? Slowly around campus, I have seen bits of spring fashion popping up in hopes of warmer days and sunshine. A popular spring trend is pastels used to add soft color pops in casual daytime looks. An entire look does not have to be dedicated to the pastel color family; however, even statement pastel pieces draw attention to otherwise simple garments. While pastels are typically trendy in the spring, this season, the use of fluffy textures are a new additive. Not only are pastels gentle colors, but following them are subtle, plushy touches.
The trend of soft, subtle pastel color pops can be slowly incorporated into any wardrobe over the course of the transition from winter to spring. Additionally, when the pastel color palettes are combined with similar materials, simple components in a look become statements. For instance, this Fashionista was sporting many pastel pieces against her dark winter attire, thus causing a striking focus on her softer pastel aspects. Combined with her black pants, boots and coat, she paired a soft, fuzzy infinity scarf and pastel pink cardigan with a white lace-trimmed top. The culmination of all these elements created a dynamic style. The simple pieces created a statement via contrasting, pastel qualities against harsh, dark colors. Even more, this Fashionista had a final piece of a pastel backpack that incorporated a soft quilted texture against dark colors that played with hard and soft elements.
A great way to transition into spring is through soft, pastel pieces added to any wardrobe against a dark canvas. A simple piece, such as a fuzzy T-shirt, a textured scarf or a cardigan suddenly become statements against the darker colors of winter wardrobes. Not only do the gentle pastel elements create a visual focus, but they also allow simple garments to be fashionable, yet casual. In particular, this Fashionista took the textured pastel trend and translated it into her own personal style by contrasting it with dark elements to transition from winter to spring.
What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “I think following trends is important…but taking the trend and translating it into your own personal style is a great way to be different and not just be a trend follower, but one with personal style.”
