STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Pattern Play

We’ve all been there. We’ve all tried to get out of the monochromatic look and take a risk into trying something new. Although I love wearing my LBD, simple shirts and jeans or even a nude colored ensemble, I sometimes wish I would experiment more with my wardrobe.

This is where patterns come into play. This trend comes every season as designers give their unique spin on patterned dresses, tops, skirts, pants and shorts. Fendi has illustrated the way orchids are a common theme in the pre-fall 2015 collection. The orchid pattern is perfect for springtime, as flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and the sun is shining.

Christopher Kane is another designer who is taking the pattern world by storm. He spices up lace by adding geometric patchwork on midi skirts. A simple silk blouse tucked in would make for a divine nine-to-five ensemble.

Meanwhile, Etro has created printed silk “crepe de chine” wide-leg pants that are a must-have for vacations off the coast of Italy. Add a white top and a hat, and you are ready to stroll through Positano!

Remember, this trend only works if one part of your outfit is patterned. If you have a patterned top, wear solid colored bottoms (and vice versa). This Fashionista pairs a simple black tank top with Aztec shorts. Black booties polish off her ensemble. Because the rest of her outfit has muted tones, it allows one to focus on the chic shorts. Now she is ready to explore the city!

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “My main focus with patterns is to keep the rest of the outfit simple so the pattern stands out in a positive way.”
