STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Plaid 101

I’m mad about plaid! Are you? That answer should be a yes. Unlike forgotten trends that survive only a year, this one is here to stay. This classic pattern has been floating around for centuries, dating back to the 1500s. The plaid trend can be spotted in famous runways, small towns and even in the Pacific Northwest. It does not really fit a specific style as it can be adapted to any wardrobe whether it be preppy, grunge or even small town-boy attire.

Today, plaid is known to take the form of flannels worn by lumberjacks and loggers. However, this Fashionisto is wearing a plaid button-down by Ralph Lauren. Pairing it with a snapback and skate shoes gives it such a laid back Lords of Dogtown vibe. Throwing on a watch instantly makes the outfit look more sophisticated and it proves that guys too can accessorize. Plaid button-downs, whether they be casual flannels or dress shirts, are a necessity in any college guy’s closet as it is an easy piece to style and can be worn simply with jeans or shorts. Not only that, but many flannels are pretty lightweight and can easily be stashed in a backpack when it gets a little warm from walking around campus. Because many are made of 100 percent cotton, it makes for a great layering piece when the weather gets a little bitter here in Corvallis. Plaids can also be worn for many occasions, class just being one of them. Conversely, there are plaid button-downs that can be worn for a more formal event, which can be paired with slacks and dress shoes.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “Comfort is key, especially here in the Pacific Northwest. Opt for jeans and a classic T-shirt for class. When the weather gets a little chilly, throw on Beaver gear to stay warm.”
