STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Playful with Plaid

Dating back to 100 B.C. when Celtic populations implemented it, plaid—also called tartan—is a crisscrossed pattern that has been receiving much sartorial affection. Interestingly, it was historically banned several times in Scottish circles because of its symbolizing rebellion against the English. Even in modern day times, many see it as a symbol of the maverick. While traditional plaid first came in woven wool, it has nowadays been printed on a variety of materials. Famous fashion houses have been releasing increasingly more pieces in plaid; some of these style dynasties include Ralph Lauren, Vivienne Westwood and Urban Outfitters.

I spotted some freshly colored plaid on this Fashionisto while strolling in the old parts of my hometown, Cluj. It was a beautiful weekday evening and his choice of clothing seemed to match his good humor. He seemed to intuitively know that the shirt would be the key piece in his outfit, so he made sure to combine it with simple, stylish pieces. The dark blue pants, combined with the suede camel shoes were a refreshing choice. As for accessories, he chose a casual watch and leather bracelets; jokingly, he later on added a straw hat, which harmoniously matched the camel shade of the shoes and that represents a symbol of the Romanian pastoral life with which he seemed to identify.

What is your STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK? “It’s so important to wear something that represents you and that makes you feel comfortable while being yourself. This shirt is full of life, just like me (laughs). It makes me feel confident and it has personality.”
