The classic stripe pattern is no stranger to the fashion industry. Stripes have been around for decades, and they are a must-have for anyone’s closet. When I think of this classic style, I think about how far stripes have come and how they have impacted the the fashion industry over the years. Back in medieval times, stripes were exclusively worn by convicts. Back then, no one would be caught dead wearing this pattern otherwise. In the 1800s, the Breton striped shirt was very popular and was worn primarily by French sailors. In the 20th century, Coco Chanel was responsible for bringing the stripe craze back to the fashion industry when she spotted several sailors in France wearing this pattern. She later became inspired to create several collections featuring stripes.
In the 1950s, movie stars such as James Dean, Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn were notorious for wearing stripes. Chuck Bass’ wardrobe from Gossip Girl was full of pinstriped button-down shirts and suits. The wardrobe from Bates Motel also consists of several striped T-shirts. I believe that it is safe to say that stripes seem to never go out of style, and they are here to stay. Stripes are constantly being incorporated into many designer clothing lines, and they are constantly being tweaked to adhere to current fashion trends. Whether the stripes are classic, awning or mixed, this pattern is a great addition to have in anyone’s closet this summer.
