STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Tighten Up

Honestly, I am so glad that chokers are on trend right now. If I told my sixth grade self that they would come back, I would be so excited. Who would’ve ever expected it? They came quickly with the influx of ’90s ideas, and it has since adopted other generations’ styles to become its own.

This Fashionista decided to go the vintage route for her choker, with this ’70s inspired bolo tie. This style is fun and unique; every person can wear it in their own way, depending on how they tie it. Some let the laces hang, but she tied hers in a bow. This works very well with the rest of her look, filling up the bit of space between where it is wrapped and where her the neckline of her dress begins.

This choker is bold but dainty, which is an interesting opposition. To accentuate it, this Fashionista tones down her outfit, allowing it to stand out. She is wearing a black bodycon tank dress, which is classically a very simple silhouette. Her dress has a higher neckline, beginning at her collar bones and it reaches just to her knees. This adds intrigue in a subtle way. She layers over her dress a denim top, which makes the look somewhat grunge. The oversized nature of the top contrasts the fitted dress, framing it nicely.

Finally, she adds another lace detail in her flats. The laced-up flats came just before the lace-up choker in trends, and she chooses to style the two together. They bring the outfit full circle nicely from her neck to her feet. One final detail that this Fashionista rocks is a tiny hair brooch which pulls her hair into a half ponytail. Its antique finish adds yet another element of previous decades’ trends, making this look very eclectic.

Every aspect of this look takes inspiration from different decades and trends, yet it all flows together smoothly. One exact source of inspiration is impossible to find, and this makes the look interesting and characteristic of this specific Fashionista.
