STYLE ADVICE: Polished Spring Graphics

With unseasonably warm temperatures come a flood of reborn Fashionistas/os. Perhaps it’s the fresh weather that inspires people to step up their street style, and to align his or her look with the freedom that comes with not having to consider: “Will I even take my coat off today?” or “Would gloves and a scarf ruin this outfit?” Not to mention the extremely inhibiting choices of snow proof footwear. By the time New York Fashion Week is around the corner, many local trendsetters are ready to strut their stuff on the sidewalk and rightfully so.

This Fashionista brought her A-game during the first hints of spring. Playing into the one of this season’s major trends, graphic prints, she styled a striped, drop waist dress with a classic black turtleneck and black opaque tights. To complete the look she added a pair of black, two-strap heels. The block-heeled, thick-strapped shape of the shoe lends a contribution to the graphic feel of the outfit.

Her makeup look is topped off with an impeccable swipe of liquid liner and a punchy pink matte lipstick. Because the rest of the look is quite polished, her naturally styled, free flowing hair helps the overall personality of the look communicate a “I know full well that I’m rocking this outfit!” vibe, instead of coming across as “Yes, I’m desperately trying to replicate a fashion editorial!”

Although many of us will be tempted to try to live up to the New York Fashion Week street style mastery that we’ll be barraged with on Instagram, I find it’s important to remember that, for many of those men and women, looking impeccable is their full-time job. As for right now, the rest of us are left to make our mark, however large or small it may be, on the style culture of our campuses. In the meantime, each of us can make our own appeal to the world of fashion from where we’re based. Someday soon, it could be you headed to London, Paris, or Milan!
