STYLE ADVICE: Rockin' it Retro

Here in sleepy, snowy Olean, it’s hard to overcome the weekly routine. The Hickey dining hall serves the same meals day in and day out. Professors do nothing to break up the monotony of classes except to pile on more readings and assignments. And around here Fashionistas/os are faced with only two options for weekend entertainment, the latter being Netflix. Always.

With the tedium of the semester upon us, it’s easy for fierce fashion to fade away. How do you silence the calls of your comfiest sweats, even when the frigid weather makes you want nothing more than to cuddle up with your warmest cup of cocoa and not emerge until spring?

This Fashionista has given me some massive inspiration. She’s rockin’ the retro look by pulling one of the best tricks in the book—borrowing!

Sporting her mother’s ancient booties and delicate necklace, this Fashionista has made a winter look entirely her own. By combining a fabulous navy coat with casual blue jeans and a poncho sweater, she looks rad and still manages to keep warm on the treacherous journey between dorm and classroom. She will not be chained by the colorlessness of gray, snowy days!

My advice to you: follow in her footsteps. Not only will this ensure your feet aren’t dampened by the thick layers of snow—boots are a western New York must—you’ll save tons of money (and body heat) in the process.

Kiss those winter blues goodbye by experimenting with mismatched colors and patterns like this Fashionista’s. Add a pop of color to a dreary day by wearing a bright T-shirt under your sweater or topping off your gorgeous locks with a trendy knit cap or other fuzzy accessory.

Instead of pilfering through the same outfits week after week, ask a friend if they have an adorable necklace or scarf you can borrow for the day. Pair this with some thrift store boots and your favorite top for a never-before-seen outfit that will knock the thick, woolen socks off any passerby.
