My name is Abby Bowen, and I’m so thrilled to be a CollegeFashionista Style Guru for the first time! I am currently a freshman studying Fashion Merchandising at Kent State University, and in the future I plan on minoring in fashion media. Ultimately I would love to end up with a career at a fashion publication in New York City, making CollegeFashionista an amazing opportunity for me to practice my journalism and writing skills.
My love for fashion began before I can even remember. My parents always tell me that I used to spend hours upon hours dressing my Barbie dolls in different outfits when I was a little girl. In elementary school, I would write on school projects that I wanted to be a fashion designer when I grew up. I remember getting older and doodling sketches of my ideas, and watching Christian Siriano win Project Runway and completely falling in love. By the time I was in middle school, I finally realized I could turn my passion into a college major, and eventually a career. The rest is history!
Although fashion has always been my biggest passion, I also have a huge love for music. In the past two years, I have attended over 40 concerts of both large and small-scale artists, and the Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati. My favorite artists include mostly alternative bands such as The 1975 and The Neighbourhood. I draw a lot of inspiration from my love of music, whether it is festival style, street style looks seen at concerts or even the bands/artists themselves.
As far as my personal style goes, I definitely tend to lean towards looks inspired by the ’70s. I love absolutely everything about ’70s fashion, especially retro graphic prints, suede, jumpsuits and flared pants. Also, being only five feet tall, platform heels are a MUST for me. I will never leave the house without rings on almost every finger, and shoes are my biggest weakness. Lately, my favorite trends have been turtlenecks and wrap headbands. I am always up for experimenting with a bolder print, a new silhouette or a higher heel!
In my free time you can find me watching Friends while sipping on iced coffee (and taking style notes from Rachel Green), scrolling through Instagram accounts of French bulldogs (my obsession) or having jam sessions in my dorm room with my roommate.
