College is a time of ‘firsts’—the first time being away from your family for a long time, the first time living on your own, the first time you meet your lifelong friends, etc. For me, attending a university 400 miles away from home meant that it was the first time that I would get to decide who I was in the eyes of my peers without my past influencing their perspective of me. I realized that I had an incredible opportunity to reinvent my image and I was going to put my best foot forward.
I started by polishing up my Instagram feed, because I knew that my future classmates would follow me there and make their first impressions of me. I began paying careful attention to aesthetic and detail in my photos. I had always been interested in photography and journalism and Instagram gave me a great platform to display who I was. I also began to really care about what I wore. I know that what’s on the outside doesn’t matter, but I regarded my fashion as a reflection of my personality. I started paying attention to trends and incorporating different elements of the latest craze into my own style. I did these things because I wanted to be a better person. I wanted my appearance and personality to attract the type of relationships that were positive and healthy.
I wanted college to be a time of many firsts. I wanted to join different clubs and activities and meet many new types of people. One of my ‘firsts’ came with the opportunity to become a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. A friend that I met on Instagram who will be attending the same college as me pushed me to apply for the internship. I didn’t consider myself a “Style Guru,” but she has great style and I have years of journalism experience. Working together would be a great chance for us to hang out and do what we love. I never saw myself working for a fashion company, but it’s the first of many ‘firsts’ in my college life. If you would like to get a peek into my life, follow me on Instagram!
