Hello Fashionistas/os, my name is Aditi Vast and I’m going to be a senior in the fall studying communications with a concentration in public relations at Monmouth University. I dabble on the journalism side of my major, having taken a couple classes and written a few stories for the online version of my schools’ paper. I usually stick to more of the music/TV side of the entertainment business, but will never miss out on the chance to be a part of the Fashion Police in my head.
Ever since I was little, award shows were the one thing that I watched with my mom every year. We judged musicians, actors and anyone who made an appearance on the famed red carpet. My earliest memory of fashion was falling in love with Keira Knightley’s 2006 Oscars burgundy Vera Wang dress, a style of dress that I would later attempt to emulate in 2013 at my senior prom but defer to a hot pink empire waist look instead. There was a charm in the simplicity of the dress that made Knightley stand out to me and it was then that I figured that my own style should be just like that; simple yet stylish and that it should let me showcase my personality.
Fast forward to 2016 and a 21-year-old Aditi is still living by that rule. I enjoy cuffed jeans and knitted sweaters sometimes to be mixed up with black pants and a plain white T-shirt. One of the concessions to the plain outfits are my shoes, usually TOMS shoes, but this year I’ll be rocking Vans’ Marvel-themed skate shoes which are unfortunately difficult to find this year in stores. The biggest giveaway into my love of fashion is makeup. I’m not one to shy away from a bold lip, purple or red, and employ metallic eye-liners to brighten up my inner corners. There’s something soothing about the process of applying makeup, except for the cat-eye eyeliner, but it is something made easy by Kat Von D’s tattoo liner and my liner of choice.
I love color and being from the country of India; color is something I understand. Our fashion is so beautifully hued and intricately stitched that it is easy to incorporate some of my traditional fashion into the more modern look. It is a style concept cropping up in the bohemian fashion movement along with the rise of more Bollywood stars in Hollywood.
My style advice to anyone on makeup or clothing is to never be afraid to wear what you want. The key to a gorgeous look is the confidence in your own self.
