Hi fashion buffs! I’m Alexa Deplas, a student at Boston College studying Communications and Studio Art. I can barely convey how incredibly excited, flattered, and admittedly nervous I am to be writing here on CollegeFashionista as someone deemed a “Style Guru.” While I’d love to tell you that I’ve gone through all my life with a passion for fashion and an incredible sense of taste, I’d be lying through my teeth.
Being the first born in a conservative Greek household, I’ve faced far too many pairs of bulky bell-bottoms, unflattering corduroys and bland shoes. Yet, brace-faced, acne-covered and banal-clothed Alexa would soon discover something revolutionary: the high school art room.
As something completely foreign to my rather conservatively brought-up self, the experimentation and creative thinking that stemmed from playing around with paints and pastels drove me into a frenzy. Being messy, free-willed, rebellious and even imperfect in my creations was actually encouraged in the art world; no matter where my hands would take each piece, there was no question that beauty would always exist.
But I became tired—tired of how restricted, how shackled I felt to only carry this artistic attitude out on canvas alone. This new persona, this new self I’d discovered, began to feel so suffocated. Naturally, I grew hungry for something that would scream “me” to a greater world.
Soon enough, I unearthed my own broader way to be heard loud and clear. It’s messy, it’s rebellious, it’s experimental and it’s even mistake-ridden at times, but it’s beautiful nonetheless. Whether I’m snuggling up in my favorite fluffy Free People sweater, attempting to act all “boss-lady” in some cool ripped jeans and Dr. Martens or trying to pull off leather and lace, my fashion sense has become a perpetual art project, one that’s allowed me to recognize and embrace the beauty that coexists with a perfectly imperfect me.
