STYLE GURU BIO: Alexandra Porter

I’m Alexandra Porter and I am a student of Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta, Georgia. My major is Fashion Design and my minor is Fashion Merchandising and Management. I love to write, explore new places and talk big ideas. When I’m not at the gym, I’m organizing my thoughts onto paper or my clothes in my closet.

As a little girl, I enjoyed fumbling through the basement dress-up box, trying on an assortment of my grandmother’s old clothes and my dance recital costumes. My childhood pastime quickly turned into a lifestyle as I routinely chose my outfits in grade school. By middle school, I was wearing heels to class and borrowing from my mother’s closet to diversify my looks. In high school, friends swore I didn’t wear the same outfit twice… but I did! (Hint: it’s all in the accessories!) Now in college, I continue to express myself through my personal style. As a hopeful trend forecaster, I enjoy researching, spotting and creating trends from the runway to the street. Meanwhile, I am exploring Atlanta and being a busy bee here at SCAD!

As an art school student, I naturally draw inspiration from my surroundings. I believe that artists have a unique way of viewing the world, and translating our perceptions into reality through mediums of expression. Fashion is wearable art; a daily exhibit of human thought and feeling. Thus, my fashion philosophy is to dress according to both my mood and environment to match the vibe, weather and occasion of the day. Some days are girly, others are bohemian, a few are edgy and some a little sporty. I love color, prints, textures and embellishment details. Overall, my style could be summed up as eclectic femme since my wardrobe is a mashup of many styles, but always with a nod to my days in the dress-up box. It is all about creating a look: coordinating clothing, accessories and makeup.

My look here is a perfect representation of my personality. I love to create unique color palettes, as seen in the pistachio dress, chartreuse bag and black and baby pink heels. The voluminous ruffles of the dress create interest, while the bag infuses a bright energy into the look. Jewelry strikes a classic note with an opal necklace from Kendra Scott and gold bracelets. Yet, there is an added bohemian flair from the assortment of metal rings. I enjoy incorporating unexpected elements, such as the streak of red in my hair and my little tattoo, both of which create a tiny bit of edge. To ground the look, I added a touch of whimsy with my favorite shoes, DIY fluffy heels I made! They are proof that you don’t have to give up the childhood fun because every day is a chance to play dress-upSo go ahead, dress to express! The world is your runway.
