Hello everyone! My name is Alexis Atkins and this will be my fifth season as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. Currently, I am a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design obtaining a B.F.A in fashion merchandising and management. In the future, I hope to work with a creative marketing team because I love working in a collaborative atmosphere.
Just a little bit about me- I think spaghetti is the best meal to take anyone out of a slump, hugs can solve most problems and all fashion should easily transition into pajamas. I mean who wants to be uncomfortable anyways (Am I right, my fellow Fashionistas)? If I had to choose one major lesson CollegeFashionista has taught me, it would be the art of personal style.
When I first became a Style Guru, I didn’t have any expectations for what the internship would entail. I just knew that I loved fashion and photography. So to me, it was the best of both worlds. After getting the opportunity to photograph and interview local Fashionistas/os on my campus, I was able to broaden my horizons from what was on the runway to how real life people make those trends their own. Approaching these random strangers and learning their fashion story is what made me fall in love with street style. Sometimes it’s not what you’re wearing–it’s why you’re wearing it.
I love looking back through my earlier posts and seeing my experimentation with trends evolve into what it is today. Some things worked and others were a miss, but that’s the fun part of styling—getting to play. I love being able to say that I have found my own style niche thanks to CollegeFashionista.
This fall I’m obsessing over two things: anything green and everything velvet. I love this velvet maxi dress because it’s in a dark shade of hunter green. If you’re someone who is loyal to their all-black wardrobe, trying a deeper shade of a color could be just what you need to add a little fun to your closet. I wanted to toughen up the elegance of the dress with a plum bomber jacket. The jacket makes the dress more wearable for every day.
To mellow out the bold color palette of my look, I wanted my accessories to be classic. I added a black velvet choker necklace with a small black evening bag. I was definitely channeling my inner ’90s girl for this outfit. Last but not least, I added a bright pair of sunglasses to complete my outfit. I can’t wait to see how the amazing Fashionistas/os I meet this semester inspire my wardrobe this season!
