STYLE GURU BIO: Amanda Mbuya

Hello fashion fiends and style aficionados! My name is Amanda Mbuya and I am a second year student at the University of South Florida, majoring in marketing and public relations. I also have been fortunate enough to be welcomed back to the CollegeFashionista family for a second semester!

Though it may be a new term filled with different trends and up and coming designers, I’ve stayed true to my own personal style. When it comes to dressing up I love the intricate finishes and smaller details of an outfit. Whether it is that chunky statement necklace I’ve been itching to wear, or a quirky lip color that I want to bring out, I always try to push myself to the fashion limit. I like to believe in the idea of one’s personal style being synonymous to growth and development, therefore I think everyone should try not to take themselves too seriously and go after the trend or piece that catches their eye! Those decisions are often what transition someone’s wardrobe from good to great. After all, wasn’t it Marilyn Monroe who said, “If I’d observe all the rules, I’d never have got anywhere”.

In observing some of the major style trends of 2015 I’d have to say that most fashion lovers took a page out of Marilyn’s chic book in wanting to add “risk taker” to their skills section. This being evident in the mixing and matching of different patterns and fabrics, or in having bright colors contrasted with darker hues for an eccentric finish.

In this particular outfit, I stayed true to my fundamental love for contrasting lighter and darker tones in the winter period. I incorporated the lighter hues of the color wheel with the olive and yellow tone of my shirt, as well as the white color of my leather jacket. A staple for every Fashionista/Fashionisto’s closet! The darker colors would have to be in my black distressed jeans paired with my thrifted wooden clogs. I finished the look with an emphasis on a bold lip color, deciding on the light purple tone of MAC’s “Stone.” Voila! My signature color-block and pop!

I’m ecstatic to once again be apart of the CollegeFashionista family and hope to bring more readers on this RAD journey!
