STYLE GURU BIO: Ammara Wasim

Hi Fashionistas/os, my name is Ammara! I’m a fourth year visual arts and drama major studying at the University of Toronto. It’s my first time interning for CollegeFashionista, so I’m really excited to see where this internship takes me. I love the arts so I’m always painting, sketching, creating music, and designing. I really enjoy photography and can’t wait to continue to practice more of my skills. I’m a huge movie junkie, whether it be watching them or working on them. I have a lot of fun writing screenplays and scripts, because I find it really fascinating to create the costumes and base the characters on their imagined wardrobe.

I’m primarily a designer and love to make my own clothes as well. I get a lot of my inspiration from travelling. It also helps that I’m from Toronto, because I love this city and I think that it’s one of the best places to live and study. It’s also a great place to spot new trends in fashion and beauty because it’s so diverse and multicultural.

One of the cool things about me is that I’m always trying out new things whether it be a club, class, or sport. This semester I would really love to focus on style found around all these different areas and observe how students manage to maintain their unique sense of style while navigating different spaces. I also want to focus on menswear because I find it to be really detail oriented, yet functional.

For this outfit, I’m wearing my pink faux fur coat from Topshop which is amazing for the cold, harsh, and brutal Toronto winter. I fell in love with the colour which was a huge switch from my usual black on black wardrobe. However, the rest of my outfit is an all-black ensemble. I started with my black high neck top. Then, I’ve paired it with my black button-down skirt. I just love this trend and I think it looks very vintage. For my shoes, I’m wearing my all-time favorite sock boots with glass heels from Zara. I love the plain black sleek boot paired with the contemporary heel.

I would describe my style as experimental and comfortable. I’m always trying out new pieces to wear, so my wardrobe is always changing. I usually choose what I’m going to wear that day depending on how I feel that morning, and I always try to add in one or two unique details to my outfits. I tend to wear a lot of darker tones especially black, which is why I love adding in different types of textures and fabrics to my outfits. I love vintage clothing and I think it’s so much fun to see old trends transform into the contemporary. What I’ve learned is that you won’t always fit in perfectly, so just wear what you feel like wearing that day.
