STYLE GURU BIO: Angela Laurito

My dorm wall consists of the following: a landscape of the city, a few photos of my closest friends, a string of mini chandelier lights, 3D diamond decals, and sparkly letters spelling out the quote “Get up and look good.” This is the first thing I’ve read in the morning since I was fortunate enough to move to the best city in the world this September. I’m just finishing up my first semester at Pace University in New York City. I’m an economics major and an artist at heart. I went to the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (always been/will be a city girl), where I majored in dance. I injured my knee senior year and got surgery this past summer, putting a hold on my dance career. Left so disheartened, I had no choice but to find another outlet for creative expression. Before I knew it, I was addicted to exploring the latest fashion blogs and online makeup tutorials. I have crossed over to the dark side and there is no turning back.

I’ve always been interested in keeping up with fashion and beauty trends, but now it’s become more than something I YouTube when I have free time. Calling it a “hobby” seems to be an understatement, so I think the most accurate term is passion! And, yes, it is possible to have  a passion for fashion.

Taking pride in your appearance is not self-indulgent, it’s empowering! I truly believe fashion is an artistic platform, if it’s used for the right reasons, which is to express YOURSELF! I’ve always tried to maintain a bold, unwavering personality (which is challenging, but rewarding), and I believe it overflows into my physical appearance as well. The goal should never be to simply be liked by everyone, but to be LOVED! The people who truly adore you often come in smaller numbers, (and inevitably entail a group of those who hate you, too), but having these kind of people is much more satisfying than having everyone’s approval, and the same goes for fashion! I prefer to make bold statements admired by few rather than safe ones approved by everyone.

My favorite thing to do is combine comfy and funky; sweats and heels are an everyday look for me. You can always catch me wearing big, colorful rings and earrings with more neutral-colored, oversized clothing to accentuate the accessories. A major benefit of being a dancer is the ability to slick my hair back in seconds, which I take advantage of daily living in the fastest paced city in the world. I often don’t have enough time to perfect winged eyeliner, but a dark purple lip and a little highlight and contour can get me through ANYTHING.

To sum me up.. Always tired. Never bored. Dark purple everything. Forever highlighted. Most likely somewhere sipping an iced coffee while silently correcting your grammar. And SO excited to be a Style Guru this semester!
