Hello Fashionista/os! My name is Ashley Kirkland, and I am a student at Drake University. I am studying magazine journalism and graphic design, and will be spending the summer back home pouring coffee at my local coffee shop and reporting for the local newspaper. After being a Style Guru for my first two semesters of college, I am excited to kick off my first summer semester with you!
While I grew up in a small, charming Iowa town with the closest mall an hour away – I still describe my personal style as urban-chic. Traditionally, I can be seen sporting my black high-waisted jeans, a pullover sweater and booties. I stored those away for summer and grabbed my favorite summer staple items: Michael Kors heels, floral dresses and Levi Brand jean shorts. While I see myself as very minimalistic and intentional with my layers, my style is much more than that. It is a way of expressing yourself when words cannot. Rachel Zoe once said, “Style is a way to say who you are without having to speak.” I could not agree more.
When I am not at my local coffee shop (working or reading the newest Vogue), I can be seen relaxing with friends in the sun (or shade for me) or trying out the newest Pinterest recipe with my mother. I am always on the run and that often reflects in my urban-minimalistic style. The only part of the year that you can catch me in colors other than black is the summer, so cheers to warm weather and begging with colored nail polish (currently: this Essie blue hue).
There are always new adventures to be had and unique styles to report on and I hope to do the same this summer semester as a rad Style Guru.
