I’m Cat McNulty and it’s so nice to be a returning Style Guru! Last semester I had a great time exploring campus fashion, so I can’t wait to do it again. I’m a sophomore studying Marketing and International Business at the University of Pittsburgh. I’m obviously a fashion lover and hoping to be a merchandiser or buyer for a big fashion company after graduation.
Personal style is important to me because it changes how I feel and represent myself everyday. Fashion can be related with shallow, wealthy or materialistic people, but I want to prove that wrong. It’s a form of fine art, but it’s an everyday activity at the same time. People underestimate how powerfully you can express yourself through clothing. Certain style and outfits can completely change your mood. For example, I enjoy feeling mature and sophisticated, so I typically wear more dressy and classy clothing. This, in return, makes me feel more confident and happy with what I wear. I think developing your style is important for your identity and can really influence how you feel about yourself.
My experience at CollegeFashionista has been very interesting for a lot of reasons. As a transitioning freshman, I looked for fashion-forward college students to feature in my articles. I realized through this process that people dress very differently on the city campus than they did in my suburban high school. There’s not as much stress on conformity and people are embraced for being different. By moving to a completely new place with new people, I realized this is the time to be your true self! Now when I look for people to feature, I want someone who owns what they wear and looks awesome whether they are traditionally fashion-forward or not.
Nobody should change your style as long as you are happy and confident with it. Do what you want! I’m not going to write an article telling you what to wear, I am going to write about how awesome this Fashionista/o looks and why they do. The goal is to inspire you, not change you. I’m excited to write about this passion of mine and I hope you are excited to read it!
