Hello, Fashionistas/os! My name is Catherine Carter, and I will be a junior Journalism and Media Studies major at Rutgers University this fall. I’m from a small town in northern New Jersey (it’s not as bad as you think!) and can’t wait to be a part of the CollegeFashionista team this semester!
I’d be lying if I said I was a trendsetter in high school and have always considered myself well dressed. While I’ve always admired the style of celebrities and how well put together they always looked, I never thought I could successfully put together a fashion-forward outfit on my own. That is until I started following fashion bloggers, many of whom have become my main source for outfit ideas and inspiration. While I hope to someday have half the closet that my favorite bloggers, such as Caitlin Covington and Julia Engel, have, it’s nice to dream for now.
Although I’m a sucker for trends, such as gladiator sandals or shirtdresses, I believe that it’s very important to own plenty of classic and neutral pieces (more often than not, I’m wearing nude nail polish and something black). If you’re on a college student budget, investing in classic pieces will be wallet friendly and fashion-forward for years to come! After all, the denim jacket you bought three years ago and the black leather boots you splurged on last fall will always find their way into your closet year after year.
What better way to show off some of my classic pieces than wearing white jeans, a gingham top and Converse? I love the pieces from this outfit because they’re so interchangeable. Too hot for jeans? Pair the gingham top with a skirt or chino shorts. Too lazy to wear a button-down shirt? Pair the jeans with a breezy tank top and a cardigan. When I go shopping, I always ask myself two questions: Will I wear this more than once? And can I wear it with more than one thing I already own? If the answer is yes to both, there’s a pretty good chance it will be hanging up in my closet by the end of the day.
I can’t wait to keep my eye out for trends on campus this fall! Stay tuned!
