Hello fellow Fashionistas/os! My name is Chelsea Oliver and I’m currently a junior at Pace University in Manhattan studying communications! I was raised in southern Florida in a small town called Fort Myers, near the Gulf of Mexico. Ever since I was a little girl, my mom’s fashion magazines intrigued me. I always had quirky style when I was a kid and often was made fun of for mixing patterns and colors. When I was 10 years old, I decided ripping fashion advertisements out of magazines and taping them on my wall was not enough. I wanted to be a fashion designer! Of course, that did not last long but I have never lost sight of having a career in the fashion world.
I’m often being told I won’t make much money or that I “live in a bubble,” but I believe a career should be something you are passionate about. When I was 18, I decided to transfer from my local university, quit the sport of volleyball that I continued into my college career and move to New York City to pursue my education in the city that never sleeps. Moving to New York was a big step, but I think actually making it there is the biggest challenge.
My style as of now is always fluctuating. In my opinion, comfort is key to feeling confident in what I wear. Since I’m in college, a lot of my time is spent in relaxing clothes so I’ve really been interested in the “athleisure” trend. On the other hand, living in the city that is renowned for fashion, I have a bit of pressure on me. My current style is a bit of casual and a bit of chic. I am inspired every day seeing so many people from different backgrounds and countries attending my university, or who are just casually strolling by.
Now that it is summer, we have the time to explore other places, be inspired, and bring back our influences to our college campuses in the fall!
