STYLE GURU BIO: Copelyn Bengel

Hello Fashionista/os! My name is Copelyn and I’m currently a rising sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  I am studying Business but my ambitions have always been in fashion. I grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina but am living in Manhattan for the summer before returning to Chapel Hill.

My first venture in fashion was in high school when my best friend and I started a small clothing business, Bohlyn.  We would thrift shop and buy vintage clothes then redesign them to be fashion-forward and youthful.  We hosted seasonal Trunk Shows and sold our merchandise to friends and friends-of-friends while also learning tons about business and fashion. Since going to college we have put a temporary hold on Bohlyn. Now, I am working for a designer boutique in SoHo called Kirna Zabete as a buying intern.

As for my personal fashion, my day-to-day style changes based on my mood and the occasion. I think the best outfits are true expressions of how you feel, as fashion is not limited to outward appearance or material things. I love combining boho and feminine pieces for warmer weather.  Some of my favorite trends for this summer are flatforms, denim-on-denim, mid-calf skirts and gladiators.

My two fashion rules to live by are: 1. You can pull anything off if you wear it with confidence.  My mom used to always say “can’t never could” meaning you can’t if you don’t believe you can, so never say “I can’t pull this off” just because you lost all confidence in yourself and in the outfit. 2. Utilize your closet.  A lot of Fashionistas/os get carried away in buying new items. But, if you step back from your wardrobe and try to combine all new outfits, besides the few you usually make and re-wear, you will discover a whole new realm of possibility within your existing closet.
