E. E. Cummings once said, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” I used to think this was just a cheesy quote people used for graduation pictures. However, this quote grew on me and I no longer think it’s a cheesy cliché. I can apply it to mostly anything: to life, to change, and even to fashion.
I’m Cynthia Erazo and I am a junior psychology major and elementary education minor at Adelphi University! This is my first semester as a Style Guru and I cannot wait to discover new looks both on campus and through my fellow Style Gurus’ articles. I’ve always been obsessed with fashion and even wanted to be a fashion designer growing up. I used to simply observe people’s styles in person and through the media because it was a little difficult for me to put my own style in action. I could never fit into the clothes that I wanted and when I finally could, I made a major fashion faux pas.
I wore a school uniform up until high school and my transition from uniformed middle school to high school was rough. My wardrobe quickly filled up with T-shirts that had Aéropostale written all over them and sneakers that were uncomfortable and not appealing to the eye. Luckily I opened my eyes soon enough and saw that this was finally my chance to show the Fashionista within me.
This is where the E.E. Cummings quote comes into play. I was a bit embarrassed to wear what I wanted to at first because it was so different than everyone else’s clothes. I learned to have fun with my style and not worry about what anyone thought. My favorite part about fashion is that accessories and hairstyles also play a big role. I’m no longer afraid to mix and match my accessories or wear space buns in public.
Over time I’ve learned a lot about my sense of style. First off, my style doesn’t fall under one category. I can be super preppy and girly one day and be casual and comfy the next day. It really depends on how I’m feeling in the morning and the weather for the day. Most of my experimenting has occurred during the past few years of college. I’ve come across people who look like they’re straight off the runway and others who look like they just rolled out of bed but still look perfect.
I have learned that fashion isn’t about name brands or fitting in, it’s about having fun and feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin! Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me. I hope you’re just as excited as I am as I begin my journey as a Style Guru!
