Hello, friends! My name is Deja Gilmore and I’m currently a sophomore at the University of North Carolina- Wilmington, aka “UNC by the Sea.” I’m incredibly enthusiastic to begin my journey as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. Although I’m majoring in Political Science and Business, I have always had a strong interest in fashion. From a young age, my mother introduced me to “classics” such as Clueless and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I was fascinated by these films and aimed to emulate the poise, bold ensembles and confidence of these women.
Over the years, I have adopted my own unique sense of style. From a Hollister Co. fiend to skater chick, I have had phases in just about everything. I find that these phases are reflective of my growth and development as an individual and also my environment. Recently, my personal style has made a shift towards comfort. After attempting to trek across my college campus in high-heeled booties, tight jeans and leather jackets, I realized that a change needed to be made. While you will absolutely catch me wearing all of those pieces, I have realized that sometimes a pair of Converse can go a long way on a 700-acre campus.
Originally, I’m from Raleigh, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the rich fashion culture that Wilmington has to offer. We have our preppy, sorority girls, hipsters and, of course, beach bums. In a beach town, it’s rare not to find girls rocking crop tops year-round. I vividly remember the first time I visited another college’s campus and shockingly found that crop tops were not an essential part of their students’ wardrobes. It’s amazing to see each campuses’ different fashion cultures. I can’t wait to showcase eye-catching pieces from UNC Wilmington and I hope that through my posts, I can provide inspiration for the creation of your own personal style!
Here, I am wearing a graphic T-shirt and jean shorts from Urban Outfitters. I paired the outfit with my Chucks and signature Fossil watch to pull the look together.
