Hi everyone, my name is Émeraude Mbuku and I am a senior at the University of Toronto majoring in film theory and history. I have always been into fashion—figuring out my own sense of style without trying to blend in too much and I’m so glad to have finally found a place where I can show you guys my favorite pieces.
My interest in fashion took a turn after having met some of my college friends. They introduced me to different textures and what I could and could not pair with specific items. Of course, I developed my own “permanent” style in my junior year, but they have influenced me in ways unimaginable; so much so that I cannot live without an over-sized coat, a black clutch, and ankle boots. Another source of fashion inspiration has been Instagram and social media as a whole. I used to just walk into a store and pick whatever looked nice without taking in for account how long an item would last me (typically three months). Now, with the help of those one minute videos, I have learned that thicker fabrics not only mean higher quality, but longer lasting.
In spite of this, I still manage to find gems at random little shops in Toronto. This semester, I hope to inspire some of you and learn from you! I also hope to further develop my skills as a visual artist, making sure that what I wear can also be seen as a piece of art. It sounds cheesy, but I am a film student after all! I look forward to spending my final year at the University of Toronto writing about all things fashion.
